After the Galapagos Islands, it was time to discover another beauty: Cuenca. We had heard and read great things about this colonial jewel, and we were beyond excited to finally discover it.
We only had two days to explore the city before heading to our last stop: Peru. Instead of planning each day, we decided to take it easy, and just go with the flow.
Relaxing in Cuenca
Our last destination in Ecuador came right down from colonial cities heaven. After a long day of travels – from Galápagos to Quito, and from there to Cuenca – we were quite tired and looking forward to rest. And we did. Not the “staying in bed” kinda rest, though, but the visiting the city, exploring the streets, admiring the gorgeous architecture, and staring at the colorful outfits of indigenous women, type of rest.
There is an unofficial competition between Quito and Cuenca for the title of the most beautiful colonial city in Ecuador. Although Quito wins when it comes to architecture and views, Cuenca comes on top for its relaxed atmosphere and cool vibes. These two are the main reasons why we could rest without resting :).
We only had two full days, and we decided to just stroll and discover…
Where and how to
How to get there: We took a flight from Quito with Tame Airlines. The airport is very close to the city center. It took us less than 10 minutes to get there by taxi for $2.50
Where to stay: We stayed at the gorgeous Los Balcones hotel, a colonial jewel formerly owned by one of the biggest artists in the region. We had a great stay and a great eat there, the restaurant being one of their strengths as well as the location: right in the heart of the historical center.*This is an affiliate link, which means that I get a small commission if a booking is made.
Where to eat. At the hotel’s restaurant. They have a varied menu, tasty dishes, and excellent service.
